Golden Cedar scale, Cedrus deodara ‘Aurea’
This Golden Cedar scale was painted for the Botanica Exhibition held at Sydney Botanic Gardens. The specimen came from the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne where I work as botanical art teacher. Last year we used this species as a term project and I particularly loved the heart shapes and the golden shimmer of the scales. The exhibition brief was to incorporate the plant’s pollinator, I used the naturally occurring hole and flowing colour lines in the vellum to represent the wind. This work is painted with water colour on vellum, my most favorite medium where I enjoy rendering the finest details.
Note from the editor:
Botanical artists are highly skilled, producing important records of botanical subjects. Their works of art are also visually appealing in their own right ; illustrations may be ink, watercolour, pencil, oils or a combination. The Gardening Magazine features Botanical Art and the artists to promote their work and to provide another platform to display these remarkable art forms.
